Development Engineer

About the Position
Based in West Lothian, Kaiam is an emerging market leader in the research, development and manufacturing of optoelectronic equipment used within data-communication centres and the telecommunications industry. In this role, based in Livingston, you will be responsible for the development and validation of new ideas. Apart from research, modelling and design of new approaches in our photonic light circuits, you will be spending time in the R&D lab where ideas are tested for our integrated photonic products. The role will report into the optics design team manager.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

 

You will take initiative and responsibility for development tasks in the research projects in the optics design team. Most of these programs are aimed at the next generation products. As a company we build transceivers using our internal photonic engines. Kaiam is continuously improving the quality and manufacturability of the optical engines, with a short term focus on (wafer-level) test and assembly automation. Our current products are deployed in hyper cloud data centers and carry 100Gb/s, 25Gb/s per laser. With each laser having its own wavelength. The four wavelengths are muxed onto a single fiber using the plc mux. Future products will carry more data, and will mux more lasers to achieve 400Gb/s combined capacity next.

 

Another active program is where Kaiam products address the requirements for the next generation mobile networks, indicated as 5G. These products operate in antenna base stations which require specific features, like wide operating temperatures, low loss, and stringent temperature stability. You will be investigating different material systems and design options to develop products that achieve these 5G requirements with long-term reliability.

 

Essential Requirements:

• PhD Degree in Chemistry, Physics or Electronics
• Familiarity with Optics
• Previous hands-on experience and programming for test equipment

• Familiarity with reliability testing and materials screening

Product Engineer

About the Position
Based in West Lothian, Kaiam’s operations in the UK began in 2013 when the company purchased the state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. Since then, the company has developed and expanded its network and customer base on an international level.

 

Kaiam is an emerging market leader in the research, development and manufacturing of optoelectronic equipment used within data-communication centres and telecommunications applications.

 

We are now looking to make the key hire of a Product Engineer who will be responsible for ensuring the best possible performance of Kaiam’s silica on silicon Planar Light Circuit (PLC) products is achieved.

 

The primary function is to continually control and improve the performance of Kaiam’s silicon chip products. Interpretation of test results and liaising with the other engineering groups to maximise the yields is the core part of this role. As such, it is expected that the Product Engineer shall develop a fundamental understanding of the physics of how PLC products work to allow them to perform. This will be achieved through learning and doing, building on your technical and physics background.

 

In this challenging role you shall also be responsible for New Product Introduction, taking ownership of determining new product performance, its improvement and supplying first product to customers.

 

This pivotal role supports the Design, Yield, Test and Wafer Fab Process Engineering groups, as well as assisting the Production team in achieving their output targets. As well as delivering high quality data to these teams on an ongoing basis, many of the objectives will be self-led improvement projects. Candidates who can demonstrate a pro-active approach to implementing improvements and who can work autonomously are sought.

 

Key responsibilities will include:
• Reporting of product yield and test performance
• Identifying performance issues and potential solutions
• Disposition of poor performing product and provide possible recovery processes
• Data manipulation and analysis
• Charting of test parameters and drawing conclusions
• Provide information to Production and management in order to improve die test methods and the operation

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Educated to at least degree level in a relevant science or engineering subject e.g. Physics, Optoelectronics, Computer Science, Statistics, Electrical engineering, your career experience to date is likely to have been in a fast paced, high technology manufacturing environment. However, applicants from recent graduates will also be considered.

 

Good organisational and project management skills are essential along with a flair for data analysis and problem solving.

 

Skills such as Statistical Process Control (SPC), MSA including GRR and other Six Sigma techniques are an advantage.

 

You must have good communication and report writing skills to be able to work between Production and Engineering functions. Preparing and presenting material to executive level at yield meetings will be required.

 

A team player who is able to work with limited supervision is essential.

Wafer Fab MEMS Process Engineer

About the Position

To support our continued growth, we are recruiting for a Wafer Fab MEMS Process Engineer, reporting to the Optical Device Engineering Manager. The MEMS Product and Process Engineer is responsible for the quality, yield, cost, performance and reliability of MEMS wafer products produced within the Kaiam Wafer Fabrication plant in Livingston, Scotland.
The primary purpose is to manage the MEMS wafer products (Product Engineering) and control and improve the Processing and Manufacturing methods (Process Engineering) used to produce them.

 

Responsibility for New Product Introduction is also part of this varied and forward-looking role, taking new MEMS and Planar Light Circuit (PLC) products from initial concept through to their transfer to the Production Department. This involves developing the processes, methods and documentation to allow this to happen.

 

The role serves as a link between the Design team and the Wafer Fab Process Engineering team to facilitate New Product Introduction into the Wafer Fab. As such the Product & Process Engineer shall work closely with both groups to achieve their objectives.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Control the quality of the MEMS product lines by providing the systems and safeguards that prevent manufacturing out of specification product

• Responsible for overall MEMS products wafer and die yields

• Maintain product specifications and responsible for Product Data Sheets of MEMS product lines, responsible for tracking changes and reflecting these changes in the product control documentation

• Ensure wafer process flows are defined for each product, that the documentation is up to date and correct and that the processes are available and correct on the MES system

• Introduce new products into the Fab, setting up documentation, product flows, tracking systems, inspections and data capture methods

• Pilot processing of new products to test the capability of the manufacturing process to allow the transition of manufacturing responsibility to Production

• Interact with external vendors and service suppliers. Set up new processes and services by evaluating the performance and adopting them as required

• Support and liaise with the PLC Wafer Fab Process Engineers to integrate MEMS products into the existing process modules

• Analyse manufacturing data, report on yields and determine root causes for main yield detractors, driving improvement projects to maximise performance

• Lead improvement projects to develop the process or methods for die yield, quality, throughput, cost reduction or safety gains

• Continuously control the MEMS processes (Plating, Wet Etch, Sputter, PECVD) and associated measurement equipment, to ensure that product is of the highest quality and output efficiently

• Manage out of specification processes and the disposition of non-conforming product through an NCR based system

• Provide guidance and assistance to Operators in their day to day running

• Perform technical tests and experiments for process development, preparing records, charts and graphs of results for presentation

• Liaise with Design, Process, Die Test and Assembly Engineers to achieve objectives

 

Essential Requirements:

• Being a self-starter is an absolute must for this position as much of the role is to drive projects forward without having to be told what to do next. Any prospective candidate must be able to provide evidence of having worked in such a style
• Experience and knowledge of wafer processing techniques (photolithography, etch, PECVD, Sputter etc.) is essential as is working in a Wafer Fabrication facility
• Education — Degree or equivalent in material science, physics, chemistry, engineering or similar
• Positive can-do attitude a necessity

 

Desirable:

• Knowledge of MEMS manufacturing techniques is desirable
• Excellent problem-solving ability; working knowledge of problem solving techniques and best practices such as Six Sigma is desired
• Team player, able to provide leadership to others and work under their own initiative
• Strong organisational and project management skills
• Ability to take complex data and distil it down and present findings in a straight forward manner
• Ability to influence others and gain their support to achieve the targets and goals of the role

Wirebond Engineer

About the Position
Based in West Lothian, Kaiam is an emerging market leader in the research, development and manufacturing of optoelectronic equipment used within data-communication centres and the telecommunications industry. To support our continued growth, we are recruiting for a Wirebond Engineer, reporting to the Process Engineering Manager. In this role, you will be supporting day to day activities for production to maintain a high efficiency and yield for wirebond. You will also be working with cross functional team to develop new programs for new products. You will have opportunities to create projects for continuous improvement which supports the overall business goal.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Sustain and maintain wirebond process
• Update and maintain procedures
• Develop wirebond process to support new product
• Generate data and report for analysis
• Improve wirebond process for yield and efficiency
• Conduct DOE or characterizations and generate report
• Train techs and ops on wirebond process

 

Essential Requirements:

• 3-5 years of experience in Au Wirebond
• Some experience on Die Bond
• Able to operate and program KNS Wirebond machine (Leadframe and Boat MHS)
• Familiar with different types of capillary and wires
• Familiar with different material plating for wirebond
• Proficient in WB parameters
• Familiarity with SPC, FMEA, RCA
• Able to operate and program KNS wirebonder
• Able to use statistical software such as JMP or mini-tab
• Able to generate data from a given database
• Able to understand wirebond parameter and functions
• Proficient in changing wire and capillary
• Team player as well as ability to work on own
• Able to present in meetings
